Knight Runs Into the Record Book as Women’s Track & Field Competes at BU Valentine Invite

Jannelle Knight - WPI Track & Field 2022

BOSTON -- Janelle Knight (Santa Barbara, CA) broke the 200-meter indoor record to lead the WPI women's track and field team to a solid showing at BU's Valentine Invitational on Friday night.

Knight's time of 25.10 placed her third overall among Division III runners at the primarily Division I meet and lowered the 25.15 that teammate Katy Nippert (Salem, NH) ran earlier this year to set the record. When converted to a flat track time, Knight's time places her third on the NCAA list.

Three other Engineers also fared well in the 200 meter event, as Nippert ran a 25.22, Vivienne Evans (Newtown Square, PA) finished in 25.40 and Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA) in 26.52.

In the 1000 meter event, both Nicole Whipkey (Portland, ME) and Elie Bowman (Oakdale, CT) topped their collegiate best marks. Whipkey finished in 3:04.87 while Bowman ran a 3:14.90.

Abby Hodges (North Easton, MA) led the WPI contingent in the 800-meter run, going 2:21.74. Deidra Anderson (Billerica, MA) and Emma Hartzel (Littleton, MA) also ran well, with Hodges running a 2:23.9 and Hartzel a 2:27.46.

Rounding out the action for the Engineers, Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) had strong mile runs. Guilfoyle finished in 5:15.24, while Kokernak crossed the line in 5:25.55.

WPI continues the season next weekend, competing at the Springfield Invitational.
