Springfield, MA --- The #24 WPI Men's track and field team wrapped up the regular season on the road at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers tallied nine top-five finishes at the event, recording three individual wins.
Leading the way for WPI were victories from Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH), Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), and Nicholas Fiorenza (Oakton, VA). Thomas won the 60-meter dash in a speedy 7.02 seconds, while Andrew took the 200 meter dash title in 23.02. Fiorenza led an impressive showing for the Engineers in the 60 meter hurdles, winning the event in 8.37, and leading a trio of three WPI runners in the top five.
The Engineers had two runner-up finishes during the event, coming from Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA) and the distance medley relay team of Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH), Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH), Jack Robertson (Uxbridge, MA) and Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA). Simoneau went 4:27.11 to place second in the mile, while the DMR squad finished in 10:51.51.
Rounding out the event for WPI were top-five individual finishes from Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) and Christopher Showan (Carver, MA). Catuccio was fourth in the high jump, with a best leap of 1.90 meters, while Shown was fifth in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line in 55.21.
Qualified athletes will now move on to the New England Division III Championships. The two day event is being hosted on the campus of Middlebury College and starts on Friday, February 25 at 2pm.
