Springfield, MA --- The WPI men's track and field team had a successful Saturday competing at the Springfield Invitational. Three Engineers won three events and the team racked up 26 top-five performances.
Leading the way for WPI were event winners Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH), Mike Reilly (Stoneham, MA), and Michael Neff (West Hartford, CT). Thomas won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.52, which is currently tied for third in NCAA Division III. Reilly won the pole vault a D3 New England Championship qualifying performance of 4.30m, while Neff was the javelin champion with a throw of 51.37m.
WPI swept the top five spots in the pole vault, led by Reilly's victory. Chris Nguyen (Tewksbury, MA) placed second in with a 4.00m, Will Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) and Matt Gadziala (Clinton, NY) were third and fourth with heights of 3.85m, and Peter Allen (Acton, MA) was fifth with a height of 3.55m.
Matthew Catuccio (Trumbull, CT) collected two third-place finishes at the event, going 12.67m in the triple jump and 1.90m in the high jump, while Axel Estavillo (Hudson, MA) took fourth in the long jump with a 6.43m mark and Patrick Hagearty (Londonderry, NH) claimed fourth in the discus with a throw of 37.00m.
Sam Furman (Groton, MA) and Lucas Anthony (Lincoln, MA) rounded out the field event highlights with fifth place performances, as Furman threw a 13.29m in the shot put and Anthony went 44.86m in the javelin.
WPI's lone relay team highlighted a strong day on the track, as the foursome of Andrew Whitney (North Kingston, RI), Tristan Andrew (Newtown, CT), Matt Lacadie (Milford, CT), and Thomas notched a runner-up finish in the 4x100, compiling a time of 42.30.
Individually, three Engineers finished in the top five in both the 800 and the 5000. In the 800, it was Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA) in third (2:01.49), Jack Robertson (Uxbridge, MA) in fourth (2:03.64), and Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH) in fifth (2:04.75). The 5000 saw Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) finish second in 15:07.46, while Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) was fourth (15:16.82) and Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA) was fifth (15:23.90). WPI dominated the 5000, ending up with seven of the top-10 finishers.
Elsewhere, Andrew was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash in 22.22, while Thomas was third in 22.73. Owen Lally (Lebanon, CT) and Robert Dec (West Springfield, MA) went 2-3 in the 400-meter dash, with Lally running a 51.90 and Dec, a 53.38.
Rounding out the track events, Anthony Algieri (Nutley, NJ) took second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.34), Christopher Showan (Carver, MA) was third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.61), and Andrew Yatsuhashi (Reading, MA) took fifth in the 1500 (4:13.16).
WPI is back in action next Saturday at the UMass Minuteman Invitational.
