Women's Track and Field Takes Second at New England Division III Championships

Williamstown, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team recorded its best-ever finish at the New England Division III Championships this weekend, earning runner-up honors at the two-day event hosted by Williams. 

The Engineers, ranked eighth in the nation and third regionally, finished with 85 points, just behind MIT's 103 total. Tufts (76), Williams (73.5), and Bowdoin (50) rounded out the top-five team finishes. Individually, WPI picked up three New England Championship titles with 11 total All-New England nods. 

Skylar Barthelmes (Dartmouth, MA), Katy Nippert (Salem, NH), and the 4x100m relay team of Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA), Janelle Knight (Santa Barbara, CA), Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA), and Nippert earned D3 New England titles at the event. 

Barthelmes took home the discus title, while also earning All-New England nods in both the hammer and the shot put. In the discus, her winning throw went 44.21m, while she took second in both the hammer (53.91m) and the shot put (13.65m). 

Nippert had another record-breaking performance, winning the 200-meter dash. Her time of 24.37 broke her own school record in the event. She also anchored the New England Champion 4x100m relay team of Pawlak, Knight, Ewing, and herself, as the foursome finished in 47.85. 

With the relay title, Pawlak was a two-time All-New England honoree today. She finished third in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 12.27. Pawlak was also ninth in the long jump in 5.37m. 

Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) narrowly missed a title in the 800-meter event, taking second place. Her time of 2:13.69 was less than two-tenths of a second off the winner. 

Abby Calistra (North Attleboro, MA) also recorded a runner-up finish, earning All-New England honors. She was second in the javelin, with a toss of 38.79m. Elizabeth Matticoli (South Brunswick, NJ) was fourth in the same event, with her throw of 36.49m also earning an All-New England nod. 

WPI's 4x400 relay team nabbed All-New England honors as well. The squad of Elise Deshusses (Chapel Hill, NC), Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY), Deidra Anderson (Billerica, MA), and Lora Dufresne (Sutton, MA) teamed up to place third with a time of 9:37.11. 

Rounding out the All-New England honorees for WPI was Morgan Collins (Hudson, MA) who took seventh place in the discus with a best effort of 36.14m. 

Dreya Martin (Franklin, MA) and Piper O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA) wrapped up the meet for the Engineers with top-10 placements. Martin was 10th in the high jump (1.56m), while O'Connell was 10th in the javelin (34.77m). 

WPI will next travel to the All-New England Championships, hosted by Bryant on May 13 and 14.
