Boston, MA --- The WPI women's track and field team opened the 2023 portion of the outdoor season at the UMass Flagship Invitational held at the Track at New Balance. Led by four New England Division III qualifiers, the Engineers tallied 16 top-25 finishes at the event.
WPI had two qualifiers in both the mile and the 1,000-meter runs. In the mile, senior Grace Hadley (North Reading, MA) finished second overall in 5:08.57, while senior Lora Dufresne (Sutton, MA) was sixth in 5:12.63. In the 1000, graduate student Nicole Whipkey (Portland, ME) finished 23rd overall with a time of 3:08.12, while senior Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) was 25th in 3:08.98.
Both senior Kaylee Gladu (Woonsocket, RI) and junior Abby Hodges (North Easton, MA) finished the meet with top-15 performances. Gladu was third overall in the 5,000-meter run, going 19:08.16, while Hodges was 11th in the 800 with a time of 2:32.24.
After Hadley and Dufresne in the mile, the Engineers also saw junior Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) and graduate student Amelia Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) round out the top-25. Guilfoyle was 20th in 5:29.26 and Kokernak was 22nd in 5:29.63.
Completing the individual top-25 performances was a trio of field highlights. Freshman Corryn Fisher (Swansea, MA) was 20th in the triple jump with an effort of 10.30m, junior Amanda Borden (Sherborn, MA) was 21st in the high jump in 1.51m, and junior Elizabeth Matticoli (Kendall Park, NJ) took 25th in the shot put with a 10.57m throw.
Wrapping up the meet for the Engineers was an 18th place finish for the 1600-meter relay squad. Junior Leithsa Dimanche (Billerica, MA), sophomore Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA), freshman Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA), and Evans combined for a time of 4:21.20.
WPI continues its season next weekend at the Tufts Multi Meet on Friday at 4pm and then the URI Invitational on Saturday beginning at 11am.
