Five Postseason Qualifiers Highlight WPI Men’s Track & Field at URI Invitational

Kingston, RI --- The WPI men's track and field team had five student-athletes reach postseason qualifying marks competing at the URI Invitational on Saturday. 

Freshman Gavin Fleck (Bend, OR), senior David Reynolds (Andover, NH), fifth-year Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA), senior Nicholas Fiorenza (Oakton, VA), and graduate student Anthony Algieri (Nutley, NJ) have all punched their tickets to compete at the New England Division III Championship later in the season. 

Fleck improved upon his qualifying mark in the pole vault, with his best effort of 4.50m good for second overall at the event. Reynolds and Brooks also improved their qualifying times with fourth-place finishes in their respective events, as Reynolds went 4:25.60 in the mile, and Brooks went 1:57.21 in the 800-meter run. 

Wrapping up the postseason qualifiers, Fiorenza took seventh place in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.76. He and Algieri both went 8.63 in the prelims of the event. 

Overall the Engineers notched 14 top-10 finishes at URI. Junior Avinash Bissoondial (Millbury, MA) had a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 8:45.00, while sophomore Ryan Fischer (Merrimack, NH) and freshman Brett Gerlach (Lock Haven, PA) each notched sixth place finishes. Fischer was sixth in the mile in 4:28.38, while Gerlach was sixth in the high jump with a 1.86m effort. 

Freshman Thomas Skerry (Dedham, MA) ran a 2:00.41 to place seventh overall in the 800-meter run, while junior Robby Doyle (Bethel, CT) and junior Andrew Peyton (Merrimack, NH) each notched ninth-place finishes. Doyle ran a 9:04.24 in the 3,000-meter, while Peyton went 1:15.01 in the 500-meter run. Graduate student Alex Simoneau (Attleboro, MA) rounded out the top 10 finishes on the track side, placing 10th in the mile in 4:29.77. 

In the field events, senior Isaac Frederique (Methuen, MA) and sophomore Will Pagliarulo (Bedford, NH) both had solid meets. Frederique was 10th in the high jump (1.76m) and 11th in the long jump (6.07m) and Pagliarulo took 10th in the pole vault with a toss of 4.05m. 

WPI's 4x800m relay team of Fischer, Skerry, sophomore Brendan May (Rutland, MA), and Brooks combined for a time of 8:16.87 to place third overall and close the meet. 

The Engineers are back in action next Saturday at the Wheaton Invitational which begins at 3:30pm.
