Kingston, RI --- Seven WPI women's track and field student-athletes reached or improved upon their New England Division III Championship qualifying marks at the URI Invitational on Saturday.
The Engineers hit four postseason standards in the 1,000-meter run, led by senior Grace Hadley (North Reading, MA) who placed third in 3:00.80, and senior Lora Dufresne (Sutton, MA) in fourth in 3:03.23. Graduate student Nicole Whipkey (Portland, ME) also notched a qualifying time of 3:05.82 to finish eighth, while senior Charlotte Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY) was ninth to qualify with a 3:06.62.
Also punching their postseason tickets were junior Elizabeth Matticoli (Kendall Park, NJ), graduate student Amelia Kokernak (Niskayuna, NY), and junior Viv Evans (Newtown Square, PA). Matticoli was eighth overall in the shot put, with a best throw of 11.39m. Kokernak took 11th in the mile, running a qualifying time of 5:14.52. Evans rounded out the qualifiers with a time of 8.10 in the 60-meter dash to finish 13th.
Elsewhere, WPI racked up 11 other top-15 finishes at the event. Junior Amanda Borden (Sherborn, MA) took 13th in the high jump, while sophomore Cassie Zimmerman (East Hampton, CT) was 10th in the high jump (1.45m) and 14th in the triple jump (10.32m).
On the track, the Engineers placed two in the top 15 in both the 800-meter run and the 400-meter dash. In the 800, junior Abby Hodges (North Easton, MA) took 11th in 2:28.68 and junior Deidra Anderson (Billerica, MA) placed 15th in 2:32.54. Racing in the 400, junior Leithsa Dimanche (Billerica, MA) and sophomore Lauren Mitcheson (West Bridgewater, MA) finished 12th (1:04.49) and 13th (1:04.75), respectively.
Wrapping up the individual top finishers, junior Jazmyn Ewing (Worcester, MA) took 14th in the 200-meter dash in 27.31, while junior Caitlin Guilfoyle (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) was 15th in the 1000-meter run in 3:12.23.
In relay action, the 4x800m team of Dufresne, Guilfoyle, Whipkey, and Hadley placed fourth overall in 9:42.39, while the 4x400m team of Dimanche, Ewing, Mitcheson, and freshman Bethany Brown (Allentown, PA) took fifth overall in 4:21.54.
In addition to today's action at URI, freshman Lauren Coutu (Baldwinville, MA) took seventh place in the indoor pentathlon at the Tufts Smith-King Invitational yesterday. Coutu racked up 2,258 points, backed by a third-place finish in the 800-meter run.
Up next for WPI, the team will travel to the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday for a 3:30pm start.
