  • Biney Named as a NEWMAC Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year Award

    INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Last month the conference announced the six institutional nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. This afternoon the NCAA released the conference honorees and the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) is pleased to announce our selections of Ama Biney of WPI and Zoe Rubinstein of Smith College as our representatives. Selection of the conference honorees are selected by vote of the 11 NEWMAC Athletic Directors. The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors student-athletes based on academics, athletics, service and leadership.

    Northampton, MA --- Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds to propel the second-seeded WPI women's basketball team to a 64-56 overtime win against third-seeded Babson in a NEWMAC Tournament semifinal on Saturday, February 24 at Ainsworth Gymnasium on the campus of Smith College.

The longtime educator and coach was an icon in the Central Mass. basketball and tennis communities.

    WORCESTER – Women’s Basketball seniors Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY), as well as Men’s Basketball senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA) have garnered postseason honors from the Worcester Area College Basketball Association, as announced Wednesday in the Telegram & Gazette. Voters included sports information directors or primary contacts from each of the nine NCAA schools in Worcester County, including Division I Holy Cross and Division II Assumption, as well as members of the local media. Biney repeated as a first team selection while Beck and Rodgers landed on their respective second teams.

Men’s Swimming & Diving totaled 13 selections, followed by Women’s Swimming & Diving with 12. Women’s Basketball featured four selections and Men’s Basketball netted a pair.

    WORCESTER -- Madison Beck led all scorers with 18 points and added a key steal in the waning seconds as WPI collected a hard-earned 61-54 victory over visiting MIT in a NEWMAC women’s basketball contest played Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium. With the victory, WPI improves to 16-5 on the season and 9-3 in conference play while MIT dips to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in NEWMAC action.

    WORCESTER -- Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) put on a clinic in the fourth quarter, grabbing two clutch rebounds, muscling the ball away from a Smith scorer and netting the game-clinching free throw in the waning seconds to secure an all too close 52-50 win for WPI in a key NEWMAC Women’s Basketball showdown with the Pioneers Wednesday night in Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers and Smith are now deadlocked at 15-5 on the season and 8-3 in conference play.

Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, RI) hauled in 15 boards - 11 defensive - for the Pride starters.

    WORCESTER – Stasha Greenalch (Newington, CT) and Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) combined for 28 points, including 13 in the second half, as WPI raced past Wheaton, 65-48, in a NEWMAC Women’s Basketball matchup Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium.
