Biney and Beck Outscore Bison as Women’s Basketball Improves to 3-0

Madison Beck

Dudley, MA --- Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) scored a game-best 22 points for the second consecutive game against Central Mass. opponents as WPI defeated Nichols, 60-33. Tuesday night in non-conference women's basketball action in the Nichols Athletic Center.

The Engineers improve to 3-0 on the year while it was the first game of the season for the Bison.

Biney also posted contest-bests with nine rebounds, six steals and four assists. Senior Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) accounted for 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and two triples while Beck and classmate Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA) hauled in six rebounds apiece.

Four of Nichols starters were in the scoring column as senior Allison Cerrato (Rockland, MA) and graduate student Brittany Donovan (Newport, RI) each registered eight points as sophomore Jessica Larsh (Bolton, CT) chipped in with seven and junior Mekaela Fithian-Giantonio (Plainville, CT) contributed six to the cause. Freshman Desiree Rivera (Windham, CT) led the Bison with seven rebounds to go with six from Donovan.

The game featured three lead changes and a tie. Nichols held a two-point advantage as late as 6:12 remaining in the first quarter and WPI was up by 28 with 1:10 to play. After the game was knotted at four with 5:51 left in the first frame the Engineers closed it out with an 8-2 run. It took nearly three minutes for either team score in the second. Once Biney broke the ice, the guests embarked on a 9-1 spurt to finish off the half.

The Crimson and Gray added five to the margin in the third and six more in the fourth for the 60-33 final.

WPI owned points off turnovers (24-5), second chance points (14-7) and bench points (17-4).

The contest was a long awaited and fitting rematch, of sorts, of the 2009 ECAC finals. The Engineers won the title in MaryLynn Skarzenski's final game as a Bison student-athlete. Tonight's game, 3,180 days later, saw the programs kick off the Skarzenski coaching era in Dudley.

The Engineers host Bates at 2pm Saturday and the Bison are back in action 6pm Monday at Anna Maria.
