Ama Biney

WORCESTER – Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) poured in 27 points to go with 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists as WPI sank Coast Guard, 59-46, in a NEWMAC Women's Basketball matchup Thursday night in Harrington Auditorium.

The Engineers (12-4, 5-1) have now won five in-a-row while the Bears move to .500 overall (6-6) and in conference play (3-3).

Coast Guard junior Micaela Martinelli (Vero Beach, CA) evened the game twice in the early going with a 3-pointer at 7:53 and with a jumper at 6:11. The final 3:58 of the first featured a 7-0 run by the Engineers, including five from Biney, for the 17-9 margin after 10.

The Bears scored the first five of the second quarter before WPI embarked on a 9-3 spurt that was capped by a nifty jumper by Biney to beat the shot clock with 5:26 remaining in the half. The senior then used a traditional 3-point play that involved another acrobatic score for the 11-point WPI lead. She later made it 15, after a bucket by classmate Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA), with 2:31 to play. A Biney triple from the wing in front of the Bears bench with 1:37 to go pushed the lead to 20, as well as saw the local product total 21 for the half.

Coast Guard scored the first seven out of the break to force a WPI timeout. Biney broke it up with a layup at 6:40. Senior Gillian Gerton (Lorton, VA) shaved the margin to 14 with a late 3-pointer for the Bears. Junior Johanna Moolenaar (Denver, NC) cut it to 10 with a layup as 1:42 remained in the contest. Gerton made it 10 with 1:10 to go as did freshman Annabella Farabaugh (Atlanta, GA) with 62 seconds left.

The Engineers clicked at 60.7 percent shooting while the Bears were held to 26.9 percent from the field in the first half and finished 38.6 and 28.1, respectively. The hosts also held advantages in points off turnovers (17-9), points in the paint (30-12) and fastbreak points (12-2) as Coast Guard scored eight of the 12 second chance points and 10 of the 18 bench points.

Seniors Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) and Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) combined for 15 points and Buckley secured nine rebounds. Classmate Stasha Greenalch (Newington, CT) handed out four helpers to go with six defensive rebounds and a steal. Biney was one point shy of her career-best that was achieved last season versus RPI.

Gerton netted a double-double just in the second half with 13 points and 10 rebounds and totaled 14 and 11 for the game. Martinelli ended with eight points and Moolenaar added six rebounds. Sophomore Zoe Riis-Fallica (Patchogue, NY) doled out a quartet of assists.

WPI travels to MIT for a 2pm meeting Saturday and Coast Guard hits the road for Wellesley for a 1pm start.
