Tyler Howe

Springfield, MA --- Carl Anderson (Billerica, MA) advanced to the winner's bracket finals at 125 pounds to highlight WPI's performance at the first day of competition at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) championships hosted by Western New England College on Saturday. Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT) is also still alive at 149 pounds for the Engineers, who are 12th place with 21 points after the opening day.

Anderson, a senior seeded fifth, won three matches on the day, starting with a major decision versus his opponent from Trinity and a win over his fourth-seeded opponent from Williams.  In the winner's bracket semifinal Anderson edged his top-seeded opponent from Plymouth State 3-2.  He will face Dan Bloom from Wesleyan on Sunday in the winner's bracket finals.

Howe, who earned a bye in the opening round, defeated his opponent from Springfield 7-1 before falling to top-seeded and nationally ranked John Marsh (New Bedford, MA) of Bridgewater State 6-5 in the winner's bracket semifinals.  Howe, who along with Anderson, is guaranteed All-New England status, will compete tomorrow in the consolation bracket, needing three wins to advance to the championship round.
