Wrestling Opens NEWA Duel Schedule with 23-15 Loss at Norwich

Northfield, VT --- Norwich won the last three bouts en route to defeating visiting WPI 23-15 in a matchup of New England Wresting Association (NEWA) schools on Saturday afternoon.  With the result, Norwich evens its dual meet record at 2-2 on the season while WPI is now 0-1.

Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT), who was bumping up a weight class, got WPI off on the right foot at 165 pounds.  The junior pinned his opponent just 45 seconds into the first period to give the visitors a 6-0 lead.  Norwich raced back with four straight wins, including decisions by Matt Valnoski (Allentown, NJ) at 174, Jordan Ferguson (Beaver Falls, NY) at 197, and Raistlin Delistle (Kennebunk, ME) at 285 and a major decision by Ray Gauthier (York, ME) at 184, to seize a 13-6 advantage.

WPI then picked up a forfeit win by Dan Gilman (Framingham, MA) at 125 pounds and 6-1 victory at 133 by Carl Anderson (Framingham, MA) to grab 15-13 lead.  Anderson, who is nationally ranked at 125, was also wrestling up a weight class.  The Cadets then used decisions by Nick Monaco (Nassua, NY) at 141 and Ryan Crosby (The Woodlands,  TX) at 157 sandwiched between a Joe Eon (Massebesic, ME) major decision at 149 to take home the victory.

WPI is back in action on Wednesday at 7pm when it hosts Springfield in its home opener.  Norwich is off until Saturday, January 5th when they compete in the Williams Invitational.
