Wrestling Opens 2010-2011 Campaign at Roger Williams Invit.

Bristol, RI --- The WPI wrestling team opened the 2010-11 season on Saturday with an eighth place showing at the Roger Williams Invitational.  Tyler Howe (Danbury, MA) headlined the Engineer effort with a second place finish at 157 pounds.  The event, won by Messiah (PA), marked the head coaching debut of WPI Hall of Famer Steve Hall.  

Howe won his first four bouts on the day, including a pair by first period pins and major decision, before falling 5-3 in the finals to his opponent from Coast Guard.  

Freshman Brian Jennings (Danbury, MA) won his first match by major decision at 125 pounds while junior Stephen Poppa (Derby, CT) also won his first outing at 133. 

Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) went 3-2 at 141 pounds with a pair of pins while senior Kenny Adams (Wilmington, MA) also notched a victory in the weight class.  Tom Lacroix (Salem, NH) helped the Crimson and Gray cause with a win at 157 while Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) rattled off two pins at 165 pounds. 

The Engineers racked up points at 184 pounds with David Cardenas (Framingham, MA) winning matches by pin and major decision and Garrett Yablonski (Mt. Sinai, NY) chipping in with a victory. 

Also wrestling Saturday for WPI was Ethan Truong (Holbrook, MA) at 141, Matt Taber (Berkley, MA) at 149 and Dylan Billings (Westminster, MA) at 197.

WPI returns to the mats next Saturday, participating in the Red Dragon Invitational hosted by Oneonta State.
