Wrestling Places Sixth at Southern Maine's Ted Reese Invitational

Stephen Poppa

Gorham, ME --- Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT), Stephen Poppa (Derby, CT) and David Cardenas (Framingham, MA) all earned All-Tournament accolades to highlight WPI's sixth place showing Saturday at the Ted Reese Wrestling Invitational hosted by Southern Maine.  It marked the final traditional weight-class tournament for the Engineers before February's NEWA Championships.

Howe, ranked third in New England at 157 pounds, recorded a pair of first period pins and a major decision before dropping a tight 6-5 decision to the top-ranked grappler from Plymouth State.  The senior captain is now 10-4 on the season with six pins and three victories by major decisions.

Poppa earned his first-ever podium appearance by winning a pair of matches at 133 pounds, including a key third period pin.  Cardenas earned his second career All-Tournament award and first since November of 2009 by winning three of five matches as 184 pounds.

At heavyweight, Anthony Corbo (Port Washington, NY) distinguished himself with a 10-second pin.  WPI has an extensive record book that includes dual meet results only.  Of the 123 dual meet pins that were under a minute, the quickest was 11 seconds by Fred Snyder on February 14th 1968 versus Holy Cross.  Corbo's 10-second pin bests fellow heavyweight and current head coach Steve Hall's quickest pin of 19 seconds but it should be noted that the Hall of Famer had five career pins under a minute while Saturday's feat was only Corbo's second.

Freshman Brian Jennings (Danbury, CT) continued his strong start at 125 pounds by amassing a 3-2 record.   Jennings tallied a pair of wins by pin to push his season total to three.  Kenny Adams (Wilmington, MA) and Tom Lacroix (Salem, NH) collected pins at 133 and 157 respectively while Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) registered a win in his only decision at 165.

Other participants for the Engineers Saturday included Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) and Ethan Truong (Holbrook, MA) at 141,  Matt Taber (Berkley, MA) at 149 and Garrett Yablonski (Mt. Sinai, NY) and Dylan Billings (Westminster, MA) at 197.

WPI travels to Springfield on Wednesday for its first dual meet of the season.  The bout is scheduled for a 7pm start.
