New London, CT --- Led by pins from heavyweight Anthony Corbo (Port Washington, NY) and Stephen Poppa (Derby, CT) at 141 pounds, the WPI wrestling team defeated archrival Coast Guard 33-15 on Monday evening in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) match. With the win, the Engineers improve their record to 2-12 on the season while Coast Guard dips to 1-17 overall.
After the Bears opened the match with a 8-4 victory at 174 pounds to claim a 3-0 lead, WPI rattled off seven straight bout victories to seize control. David Cardenas (Framingham, MA) got the visitors on the board with a 18-10 major decision at 184 before Joe Vanni (Hamilton, MA) took a tight 5-4 decision at 197. Corbo put the Engineers up 13-3 when he pinned his opponent at 3:19.
Freshman Brian Jennings (Danbury, CT) took a forfeit win at 125 pounds before Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) posted an 18-1 technical fall at 133. The Crimson and Gray put the match out of reach with a first period Poppa pin at 141 (1:21) and a Matt Taber (Berkley, MA) 11-4 victory at 149. Coast Guard closed out the night with forfeit wins at 157 and 165.
WPI closes out its dual meet season on Thursday, hosting Norwich at 7pm. Coast Guard is back in action on Friday at 5pm, venturing to Johnson & Wales for a tri-match with Western New England.
