Hartford, CT --- Tyler Howe (Danbury, CT), Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH), Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) and David Cardenas (Framingham, MA) all assured themselves of All-New England accolades to highlight WPI Wrestling's performance on day one of the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships hosted by Trinity on Saturday.  The four All-New England athletes are the most the Engineers have had since 2005.

As a team, WPI racked up 31.5 points on Saturday and currently sits in 10th place.  Springfield leads the 14-team championship with 104 points followed by Wesleyan (73.5) and defending champion Williams (72).

Howe and Perruccio made the winner's bracket semifinals at 157 and 133 pounds respectively.  Howe began his tournament with a 13-1 major decision win over his opponent from Williams before blanking his opponent from Wesleyan 2-0.  In the semifinals the senior dropped a tough 3-2 tie-breaker #2 decision to the top-ranked opponent from Plymouth State.  Perruccio began the day will a thrilling 5-4 upset of the third-ranked wrestler from Wesleyan.  He advanced to the semifinals with a tight 2-1 victory over his opponent from Coast Guard before falling 3-2 to his opponent from Johnson & Wales.

Cardenas advanced in the winner's bracket at 184 with a 14-8 triumph over his opponent from Trinity before being pinned by the top-seeded wrestler from Johnson & Wales.  The senior advanced to Sunday with a pair of consolation decisions over wrestlers from Coast Guard (7-4) and Springfield (9-5).  Freilich was forced to the consolation bracket early after a loss to a Wesleyan wrestler that ended up advancing to the winner's bracket finals.  After a bye, the freshman pinned his opponent from Johnson & Wales and pitched a 4-0 shutout over his counterpart from Norwich.
