Wrestling Begins Golden Anniversary Season at Roger Williams Invitational

Bristol, RI --- The WPI Wrestling team kicked off its 50th season on Saturday by competing in the Roger Williams Invitational.  The Engineers amassed 34 total points while Stevens took home the title at the 11-team event.

Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) posted the most victories for the Crimson and Gray winning four matches Saturday.  The freshman notched two pins at 133 pounds to go along with a pair of 8-3 wins by decision.  His wins included defeats of a defending meet champion, the wrestler seeded second at last year's NEWA Championships and a returning All-New England wrester.  Classmate Scott Carpenter (Calais, ME) also tallied two victories by major decision in a very deep and talented 133 division. 

Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) and Zach Hartzell (Gettysburg, PA) registered three wins each.  Perruccio, a returning All-New England place winner, recorded a first period pin at 149 while Hartzell sported a win by major decision at 157.   

Returners Brian Jennings (Danbury, VT) and Garrett Yablonski (Mt. Siani, NY) both collected a pair of wins.  Jennings earned decision triumphs at 141 while Yablonski had a major decision to his credit at 184.

Tom Lacroix (Salem, NH) rattled off a quick 40-second pin at 165 pounds and Austin Brais (Plaineville, MA) provided dramatics for WPI with a 6-4 sudden victory at 149. Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) posted a first period pin at 174. 
Others competing for the Engineers on Saturday included Eli Wolfang (Warren, RI) at 141,Matt Taber (Somerset, MA ) at 149, Duncan MacKinnon (Colcheser, CT) and Kelly Kalbacher (East Hampton, NY) at 165, Teddy Kostopoulos (Milford, CT) at 184 and Bryan Barnash (Trumbell, CT) at heavyweight.

WPI is back in action next Saturday at the Red Dragon Invitational hosted by Oneonta State.
