Williamstown, MA --- Sophomore Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) earned a 3-2 decision in a winner-take-all bout at 141 pounds to help WPI post a thrilling 23-18 victory over host Williams in a quad match on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers wrapped up competition at the highly competitive quad with a 38-3 loss to Johnson & Wales, the top ranked team in New England, and a 24-15 defeat to New York power Oneonta State.
Trailing 3-0 after the opening match at 149 pounds, Zach Hartzell (Gettysburg, PA) got WPI going with a technical fall (7:00 - 17-2) at 157. The Ephs took a 6-5 advantage with a win at 165 before the Crimson and Gray rattled off a pair of wins with Duncan MacKinnon (Colchester, CT) posted his first collegiate win (by decision) at 174 and Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) notching a first period pin at 184.
Williams took the lead back at 15-14 via a decision at 197 and a pin at heavyweight. WPI's DJ Russo (Terryville, CT) was credited with a forfeit at 125 to give the Engineers a 20-15 advantage with just two bouts left. The hosts forced a deciding bout by claiming a decision at 133 to slice the lead to 20-18 and setting the stage for Perruccio's heroics at 141.
Andrew Tanner (Danville, NH) opened up the Johnson & Wales match with a 8-4 win at 149 pounds.
Four wrestlers registered victories in the tight 24-15 loss to Oneonta State. Freshman Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) defeated the 10th-ranked wrestler in the country 5-2 at 133 pounds. Bryan Barnash (Trumbull, CT) recorded a pin at heavyweight while Tom Lacroix (Salem, NH) and Perruccio chipped in with victories by decisions at 165 and 141 respectively.
WPI is off now until 2012, traveling to Rhode Island College for a 7pm dual meet on Wednesday, January 11th.
