Keystone Connection Helps Wrestling Defeat Rhode Island College 30-18

Worcester, MA --- Pennsylvania natives Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) and Zach Hartzell (Gettysburg, PA) each posted first period pins to propel WPI to a 30-18 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) victory over visiting Rhode Island College on Wednesday evening. 

WPI, ranked ninth in the latest NEWA Top 10, evens its overall record at 3-3 and remains undefeated (3-0) in the new Sports and Recreation Center. The sixth-ranked Anchormen are now 3-10. 

It was the visitors that jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind a forfeit at 125 pounds credited toMike Sugermeyer (Hampden, MA) and a 13-7 victory by Jonathan Murray (Bay Shore, NY), the top-ranked 125 pounder who bumped up to 133.  

The Engineers then rattled off six straight wins to grab the victory.  The spurt began with a pair of decision victories from Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) and Mike Perruccio (Pelham, MA) at 141 and 149 pounds respectively.  The combo of Tilbe and Perruccio are now a combined 26-5 on the season.  WPI then earned six points when 157-pounder Andrew Tanner (Danville, NH) picked up the win by injury default.    

Leading 12-9, the Crimson and Gray clinched the victory when Marsh won by fall at 165 pounds at 43 seconds and Hartzell pinned his opponent at 39 seconds.  Alex Freilich(Worcester, MA) earned WPI's final points of the night, taking a forfeit at 184. 

Rhode Island College closed out the match with a Adam Lynch (New Milford, CT) win by decision at 197 and a second period pin by Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) at heavyweight.  

WPI heads to Collegeville, Pennsylvania for Saturday's Abele Invitational hosted by Ursinus.  Rhode Island College also heads to the Keystone State.  The Anchormen will participate in the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming on Friday and Saturday.
