Worcester, MA --- Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) and Zach Hartzell (Gettysburg, PA) of host WPI each won two matches Saturday to advance to the final day of the 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships.
Tilbe, the fifth seed at 141 pounds, opened his tournament by posting a 16-0 technical fall against his opponent from Norwich. After falling in the championship quarterfinal, the sophomore knocked off the second seed and returning All-America from Cortland State 7-4. Hartzell dropped his first match of the day at 174 pounds but stayed alive by pinning his opponent from Norwich in the first period and notching a 5-4 decision to the eighth-seeded wrestler from Trinity.
The duo will each have to win two matches Sunday morning in order to reach the third-place bout, where a victory there on Sunday afternoon would send the winner to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Action become Sunday in the Sports & Recreation at 10am.
Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH), Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) and Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) all reached the championship quarterfinals before bowing out. Perruccio out pointed a Oneonta State grappler 8-3 at 149 pounds while Marsh knocked off his opponent from Western New England at 165 (7-2) in his opening bout and Freilich also defeated a Golden Bear wrestler (9-4) at 184.
Brian Jennings (Danbury, CT) registered an 11-1 consolation round victory at 133 pounds over a wrestler from Coast Guard. Andrew Tanner (Danville, NH) was also credited with a victory in the consolation round at 157 before being eliminated in sudden victory one. The Engineers also picked up consolation triumphs versus Plymouth State in the later weight classes with Teddy Kostopoulos (Milford, CT) racking up a 11-1 major decision and Joe Szerszunowicz (Milford, MA) tallying a first period pin at heavyweight.
