Tilbe Takes Title for Wrestling at RIT Invitational

Rochester, NY - Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) was a champion at 141 pounds and Brian Jennings (Danbury, CT) posted a third place showing at 133 as the WPI wrestling team placed seventh Saturday at the RIT Invitational.  The Engineers tallied 81 points on the day, just three points away from the hosts for sixth place.  John Carroll won the 11-team event with 140 points. 

Tilbe began his day with a pair of major decisions against opponents from Baldwin Wallace and Josh Carroll before notching a 6-4 win against Wesleyan in the semifinals.  He took his first career tournament title by defeating a wrestler who is an honorable mention nationally-ranked wrestler from Oneonta State 3-1 in overtime.  Jennings won four times on the day, including a first period pin against Washington and Jefferson and a quarterfinal 12-2 major decision victory against Oswego State.  After a loss in the semis, he won a pair of bouts, including by fall at 1:13 against a John Carroll opponent for third place. 

Five other wrestlers found themselves on the podium Saturday.  Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) reached the semifinals at 157 pounds by registering a pin and a major decision respectively against foes from Scranton and Case Western Reserve.  After a pair of tough losses, he edged a wrestler from Wesleyan 3-2 for fifth place.  Freshman Zachary Rahl (Pittsgrove, NJ) was also fifth at 157.  He won four matches on the day - all by decision - including one in the opening round against Wesleyan and consolation victories versus Case Western Reserve and a pair of wrestlers from Oneonta State.   Classmate Brian Amato (Newington, CT) was 2-1 en route to a sixth-place showing at 125.  The rookie recorded a pin in his first career match against Scranton then posted a 8-5 triumph in the quarterfinals.  Amato fell in the semifinal and then medically forfeited a pair of consolation bouts. 

WPI had a pair of place-winners at heavyweight with Peter Salem (Dracut, MA) using a first period pin to finish fourth and Peter DiMaggio (Westford, MA) coming in sixth. 

Four other Engineers reached the quarterfinals.  Joe Pizzuto (Liverpool, NY) scored a pair of major decisions in the winner's bracket at 174 pounds against Alfred State and Baldwin Wallace.  Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) knocked off a pair of New England wrestlers at 165, including a foe from Wesleyan in the second round and an opponent from Southern Maine in the wrestle-backs while Anton Libsch (Milton, MA) and Torin Zonfrelli (Carver, MA) each won a bout in the winner's bracket at 157 and 165 respectively. 

Matt Taber (Berkley, MA), Austin Brais (Plainville, MA) and Everett Wenzlaff (Natick, MA) all record wins for the Crimson and Gray after dropping their opening bouts.  Taber had his hand raised twice at 149 pounds while Wenzlaff pinned his opponent from Alfred State in 54 seconds and Brais posted a 13-5 major decision over his foe from RIT. 

WPI is back in action next Saturday when they hosted Johnson & Wales and Oneonta in a tri-match.  The action in the Sports and Recreation Center begins at noon with the Engineers wrestling at approximately 2pm and 4pm.
