Wrestling Closes Out Dual Meet Campaign with a Split at Western New England

Springfield, MA --- The WPI wrestling team concluded the 2013-14 dual meet season at Western New England on Saturday afternoon, defeating the host Golden Bears 45-6 before dropping a tough 24-16 decision to Brockport State in the finale.  Multiple winners on the day for WPI included Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT), Torin Zonfrelli (Carver, MA) and Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA).   

The Engineers claimed nine of the 10 bouts against Western New England, including the first seven matchups.  Tilbe took home an 11-3 major decision at 141 pounds after Brian Amato (Newington, CT) and Brian Jennings (Danbury, MA) were awarded forfeits at 125 and 133. Mike Perruccio (Pelham, NH) followed with a 12-0 major decision of his own at 149 before Zachary Rahl (Pittsgrove, NJ) posted a 11-5 triumph at 157. 

The WPI spurt concluded with a Zonfrelli win by forfeit at 165 and a Marsh tech fall (16-1 - 6:29) at 174.  After Western New England scored a victory at 184, the Crimson and Gray finished the match with a Joe Pizzuto (Liverpool, NY) third period pin at 197 and a Teddy Kostopoulos (Milford, CT) tech fall (15-0 - 3:27) at heavyweight. 

Against Brockport State, WPI was down 12-3 after five bouts with lone win coming via Tilbe (4-0) at 141 pounds.  The Engineers then rattled off three straight victories to surge ahead 16-12 with a Zonfelli 9-3 decision at 165, a 12-0 major decision from Marsh at 174 and a pin by Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) at 184 only to see the Golden Eagles sneak out with the win after recording pins in the final two weight classes.  

The Crimson and Gray finish the dual meet season with a 12-11 record, the most wins in a decade. 

WPI is off until the NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals, which will be hosted by Wesleyan on Saturday, March 1st and Sunday, March 2nd.
