Williamstown, MA --- Joe Pizzuto (Liverpool, NY) and Brian Amato (Newington, CT) closed out WPI's 24-19 victory over Springfield with back-to-back pins as the Engineers completed the dual meet season with a tri-meet Saturday at Williams.
The victory was just the second ever for WPI over the Pride and the first since the 2008-2009 season. The Crimson and Gray, who fell in the middle match to the host Ephs 41-4, end the dual meet campaign with a 11-13 mark.
Pizzuto was wrestling up at heavyweight and got the call in the penultimate match with WPI trailing 19-12 after eight bouts. The junior delivered in a tied match with a third period pin to close the gap to 19-18 to set the stage for Amato's heroics. With the six points from Pizzuto in hand, the top-ranked 125-pounder in New England came out only needing a win and pushed his way to a 13-0 advantage before securing the team win with a pin in opening seconds of the third period.
WPI had to claw back from an early 12-3 deficit and did so with an Andy Tanner (Danville, NH) 1-0 shutout at 165 pounds and a Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) first period pin at 174. Earlier in the match, Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) made his season debut at 141 pounds a successful one with a 5-1 victory.
Marsh was WPI's lone double-winner on the day as he posted a 14-5 major decision at 174 versus Williams.
WPI now turns its attention to the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships. The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, February 28th and Sunday March 1st at Roger Williams.
