Wrestling Defeats Norwich and Nationally-Ranked Ursinus to Begin Dual Meet Slate

Justin Marsh

WORCESTER -- Pete Nash (Liverpool, NY), Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) and Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) each registered multiple victories as host WPI opened the dual meet portion of its schedule with a pair of tight victories Saturday afternoon in the Sports & Recreation Center.

The Engineers rallied from early deficits in both matches, knocking off Norwich 20-17 before handing No. 26 Ursinus a 22-20 setback.  No. 2 Roger Williams also won a pair of matches Saturday, defeating Ursinus 22-9 and Norwich 44-6 while the Cadets notched a narrow 22-21 win over Ursinus in a match decided on criteria.   WPI and Roger Williams were the only two teams not to meet in the quad as the two teams will tangle in January in another quad match in Worcester.

WPI found itself down 7-0 in each match before Nash got the Crimson and Gray on the board in both of his bouts at 141.   The rookie registered a 15-3 major decision in his first collegiate bout against his opponent from Norwich.  Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) put WPI ahead in its matchup with the Cadets with a 11-3 major decision of his own at 149 only to see the visitors surge ahead 13-8 by winning the next two contests.  The Crimson and Gray got a late first period pin by Marsh at 174 only to see David Rogers (Marlboro, MA) grab four points back with a major decision for Norwich at 184.  WPI then turned to the heavyweight duo of Curtis and Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) for the victory.  Curtis saw his hand raised following a 10-3 win at 197 and Shrewsbury secured the triumph with an 8-3 decision at 285.

The Engineers found themselves in same situation versus Ursinus, trailing 7-0 before Nash grinded out a 7-6 victory.  This time the Bears quickly countered with a pair of tech falls to push its advantage to 17-3 before WPI seized control with four straight wins.  Constantine Galanis (Ispwich, MA) and Curtis sandwiched the spurt with first period pins at 165 and 197 while Marsh tallied a 13-4 major decision at 174 and Daniel Wensley (Wakefield, MA) pitched a shutout at 184.  Ursinus needed a pin at heavyweight to steal the team but the nationally-ranked Bears could only muster a narrow 3-2 victory in the day's final bout.

Other multiple winners on the day included Jacob Forsman (Voorhees, NJ) at 125 and Rogers at 184 for Norwich, Chris Tan (Robbinsville, NJ) at 125, Keven Hoodhgeem (Deerfield, IL) at 133 and Derek Arnold (Centreville, VA) at 157 for Ursinus and Justin Cochran (Paramus, NJ) at 141, Daniel Downes (Hosuton, TX) at 149 and Joe Albina (Milford, NH) at 184 for Roger Williams.

All four teams are off until the first weekend in December.  WPI (2-0) and Norwich (2-2) head to the Rochester for the RIT Tournament and Roger Williams (5-0) ventures to York (PA) for the New Standard Corporation Invitational both on Saturday, December 5th while Ursinus (0-3) begins competition a day earlier in the two-day Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah.
