WORCESTER --- Michael Curtis (Wells, MA) and Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) posted wins in the final two bouts to help WPI rally from 15-14 deficit to defeat No. 22 Ursinus (PA) 21-15 and complete a three match sweep of a home Super Quad on Saturday at the Sports & Recreation Center. Earlier in the day the Engineers knocked off King's (PA) 30-12 and upended Norwich 30-10.
Down by a point in the nightcap, Curtis put the Crimson and Gray ahead by three points when he notched a 12-3 major decision at 197 pounds to put the hosts ahead 18-15. Shrewsbury then took the mat with a chance to seal the match did so with a thorough 8-2 victory at heavyweight over the seventh-ranked wrestler nationally. After being down 3-0, Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) and Andrew Ellis (Arlington, MA) staked WPI to a 8-3 advantage after Jendritz tallied a 20-2 tech fall at 133 and Ellis grinded out a 6-3 victory at 141. Following a Ursinus win by decision at 149, rookie Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) record a first period pin of the nation's third-ranked wrestler at 157 to put the Engineers up 14-6. Three straight Bear victories then set the stage for Curtis and Shrewsbury's heroics.
In the other two victories it was the lightweights that got the Boynton Hillers quick leads they would not relinquish. In the opener versus King's, Brian Amato (Newington, CT) tallied a 16-6 major decision at 125 pounds and Jendritz at quickly followed with a 16-0 tech fall at 133 to give the Engineers a 9-0 bulge. Following a Monarchs victory, the combo of Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) and Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) registered decision triumphs at 149 and 157 respectively and then after two more King's wins, the hosts closed out the contest with back-to-back pins by Lucas Muntz (West Hartford, CT) at 184 and Curtis at 197 and a 5-2 victory by Shrewsbury at heavyweight.
The combination of Amato (18-2 tech fall) at 125 and Jendritz (8-3) staked WPI to a 8-0 lead against Norwich. Nigro began a run of four straight Engineers wins when he pulled out a 5-2 decision at 149 before Marsh followed with a comprehensive 15-4 major decision at 157. The hosts then worked overtime in the next two wins as Lind delivered a 9-4 win in TB1 at 165 and Anton Libsch (Milton, MA) earned a 3-1 victory in sudden victory 1 at 174. Curtis also posted a 7-3 win at 197 and Nick Day (Northampton, MA) made his season debut with a first period pin at 285.
Roger Williams was also undefeated on the day. The nationally-ranked Hawks bested Norwich 22-15, defeated Ursinus 34-5, knocked off Castleton 32-15 and beat King's 32-9. Other winners included Ursinus 28-15 over Castleton, King's 27-12 over Castleton and Norwich 25-23 over King's.
All six squads are off until over a week after the Thanksgiving holiday. WPI (3-0) and Norwich (1-1) will venture to Rochester to participate in the RIT Invitational on Saturday, December 3rd while Roger Williams (4-0) heads to York (PA) for the New Standard Corporation Invitational and Castleton (3-7) takes part in the Ted Reece Invitational at Southern Maine on the same day. Ursinus (1-2) begins action on Friday, December 2nd in the two-day Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah and King's (3-6) is at the Pennsylvania College of Technology for a dual meet on Sunday, December 4th beginning at 7pm.
