Marsh Nets Pair of Pins as Wrestling Sweeps Merchant Marine and Hunter

NEW YORK -- Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) tallied a pin in each match as WPI defeated Merchant Marine and Hunter in action Sunday contested at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx. The Engineers defeated the Mariners 26-9 in their opener before shutting out Hawks 58-0. 

The wins move the No. 16 Crimson and Gray's record to 11-1 on the season and it makes the fifth straight season WPI has reached double digit dual meet victories.  The win versus Merchant Marine also marked the 75th career victory for eighth year head coach Steve Hall.   

In their first match, the Engineers broke up a 3-3 tie against Merchant Marine with six straight triumphs, featuring a pair of major decision shutouts, a pin and three wins by decision. Andrew Ellis (Arlington MA) and Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) got the spurt going with 11-0 and 12-0 blankings at 141 and 149 pounds respectively before Marsh collected the morning match's lone pin, a second period fall at 3:37.  

Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) continued the run by pitching a 5-0 shutout at 165 pounds while Mike Ilic (Parsippany, NJ) added a 4-1 decision at 174 and Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) concluded the impressive burst by registering a 5-2 victory at 184.  WPI's other win against the Mariners was a 4-2 triumph by Ben Zogby (Franklin, MA) at 125.    

In their meeting with Hunter, the Boynton Hillers totaled five pins and received four forfeits.  Michael Aquino (Boston, MA) started the pin parade with a fall at 3:34 in his bout at 125 pounds while Marsh, Marion, Ilic and Wensley accounted for four consecutive first period pins from 157 to 184.  Ellis accounted for a 11-0 major decision at 141 and 133-pounder Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI), Nigro (149), 197-pounder Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) and heavyweight Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) all saw their hands raised in victory after Hawk forfeits. 

WPI turns its attention to the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships, which will be hosted Sunday, January 21st by Johnson & Wales at the Providence Career & Technical Academy.  Seedings and brackets will be announced later this week.
