Shrewsbury Shines for No. 21 Wrestling in Home Quad Meet Including No. 4 and No. 16

Austin Shrewsbury

WORCESTER -- Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) won all three of his matches, including a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, and Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) went 2-0 on the day as nationally-ranked WPI hosted a wrestling quad on Saturday in the Sports & Recreation Center.  The No.21 Engineers defeated Southern Maine 21-13 before suffering a 29-6 setback to No. 4 Johnson & Wales and falling 30-12 to No. 16 Brockport.

In other matches, Johnson & Wales rallied to win the last three bouts to edge Brockport 18-16 and the Golden Eagles came back themselves to defeat Southern Maine 27-18.

With match-ups beginning at 184 pounds on the day, the Crimson and Gray trailed Southern Maine 3-0 in the opener before Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) blanked his opponent 6-0 at 197 pounds and Shrewsbury fought off a move from his opponent and got two points of his own to claim a 3-1 win in SV1.  The two teams alternated victories in the next four bouts with Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) pitching a 4-0 shutout for WPI at 133 and Nigro collecting a 8-3 victory at 141 to give the Engineers a 12-10 edge with just three matches remaining.

Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) looked to give the hosts some major breathing room as he appeared  headed towards a tech fall at 157 pounds, but the second-ranked sophomore did better than that, tallying his team-best 12th pin early in the third period to put the Boynton Hillers up 18-10.  Top-ranked Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) secured the victory for the Engineers with a hard earned 3-1 triumph at 165 pounds in the penultimate bout.

Shrewsbury worked overtime again in the match against the Wildcats as the third-ranked wrestler from New England and his nationally ninth-ranked opponent from Johnson & Wales went the full 11 minutes before the heavyweight emerged with a 4-3 victory.  Nigro also worked extra time in his 149-pound bout, besting his foe 3-1 in SV1.  Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) provided WPI with their other victory versus JWU, a 10-7 decision at 165 pounds.

In their final outing of the day, the Engineers captured 4 of 10 bouts versus Brockport.  Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) got things started with a solid 10-3 victory at 197 pounds.  After the Golden Eagles evened the match, Shrewsbury put WPI back ahead with another tight triumph at 285, this time a 3-2 decision.  The Crimson and Gray tied the match for the final time at 133 pounds when Jendritz's 5-3 win at 133 knotted the score at 9-9.   Brockport took home four of the last five bouts, with WPI's Ronan Ball (Maynard, MA) interrupting the run with a 10-3 triumph at 165.

WPI is now 15-4 on the season closes out its regular season home slate next Saturday with an 11am super quad.  The Engineers will face Bridgewater State and NYU in an event that also features Coast Guard and Roger Williams.
