Bristol, RI --- Wayne Nolette (Nashua, NH) and Ronan Ball (Maynard, MA) won their respective weight classes as the WPI wrestling team placed second at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures meet on Sunday hosted at Roger Williams.
As a team, the Engineers amassed 103.5 points to outdistance third-place Roger Williams (81) by over 20 points. Johnson & Wales won the 12-team event with 162 points.
Nolette won five times on the day to capture the crown at 149 points. He started with a pair of tech falls and a pin before two narrow decisions, including a 2-1 victory in the title match. Ball was dominant on his way to the championship at 157, amassing a trio of first period falls and a tech fall.
Four other wrestlers earned their way to the podium Sunday. Michael Aquino (Boston, MA) won a pair of bouts by decision to reach the finals at 125 pounds before falling 2-1 in the championship while Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) was victorious his first three times on the mat before being defeated in the finals at 165. Senior Logan Mendelson (West Bloomfield, MI) wrapped up his four-year career with four wins, including a pin in the waning seconds that secured third place for the heavyweight. Tyler Wilson (Derry, NH) had his hand raised twice in victory on his way to a fourth place showing at 174 pounds. Pete Nash (Liverpool, NY) battled his way back from an opening round loss at 165 to win three times, including a pin and a tech fall, to nab sixth place.
WPI returns home next weekend to host the NCAA Division III Northeast regionals. Action begins at 11am Saturday and continues at 10am on Sunday.
