WORCESTER -- Sophomore Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) finished second, and six other WPI wrestlers reached the podium as the Crimson and Gray turned in an impressive second place team showing at home Sunday in the final day of action in the 2018 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional.

Second through sixth placers were separated by just a total of 5.5 points with the Engineers finishing second with 92.5 points followed by Wesleyan (91.5), NYU (89), Southern Maine (88) and Roger Williams (87).  The second place finish for WPI was its best in a conference/regional tournament since sharing the 1995 New England Championship.  Johnson & Wales racked up an impressive 156.5 points en route to its second straight team title.

Marsh, and the top three in each weight class advance to the 2018 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace on Friday, March 9th and Saturday, March 10th in Cleveland, Ohio, while the top six earned all-region recognition. Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) and Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) each narrowly missed a trip to nationals as both placed fourth at 184 and heavyweight respectively.  133-pounder Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI), 165-pounder Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) and 197-pounder Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) all took fifth while Ben Zogby (Boston, MA) took sixth at 125.

Marsh punched his ticket to Cleveland by grinding out a 4-2 victory over Christopher Sullivan of Coast Guard in the semifinals.  The sophomore 133-pounder then dropped a tight 3-2 decision to NYU's Raymond Jazikoff in the finals.  Shrewsbury had a busy day winning his first two matches to earn a spot to wrestle for third.  The junior notched a second period pin over Frank Girolamo of Norwich before besting Castleton's Jesse Webb 4-1.  The heavyweight lost a tough one to Jonah Aurelio from Johnson & Wales 4-2 in SV2 to finish in fourth.  Wensley began his day in the semifinals, dropping a 16-4 major decision to eventual champion Khamri Thomas of Johnson & Wales.  The junior rebounded with a 4-1 victory against Williams' Sebastian Dziadkiewicz before placing fourth after a tough 4-2 setback to Connor Humphries from Roger Williams.

Jendritz went 2-1 on the day, sandwiching victories versus Wesleyan's Zack Murillo (2-0) and Springfield's Ian Tolotti (7-2) around a tough 2-1 loss to eventual national qualifier Owen McClave of Coast Guard.  Other wins for WPI on the day including victories in the fifth place matches by Marion (first period pin of Yo Akiyama from Williams) and Curtis (3-2 victory over Jack La Corte of NYU) and a 10-1 major decision from Zogby over Nicholas Arborio from Western New England.  Junior Andrew Ellis (Arlington MA) also competed Sunday for the Engineers.
