Hay, Gibson, Diakides All Finish Third as Wrestling Places Fifth at NEWA Futures Tournament

Springfield, MA --- Edward Hay (Bangor, PA), David Gibson (Goffstown, NH) and Nikolaos Diakides (Union, NJ) all placed third as the WPI competed in the New England Wrestling Association Futures Tournament hosted by Western New England on Saturday. 

As a team the Engineers compiled 46.5 points to place fifth in the 15-team event.  Roger Williams took the title with 141 points while Johnson & Wales (133.5) edged Springfield (129.5) for second place. 

Hay scored 17.5 team points at 157 pounds, leading the Crimson and Gray in scoring.  The sophomore won by a tech fall in the championship round 2 16-1 advancing him to the quarterfinals where he won by decision (9-4) over an opponent from Springfield.  After falling in the semifinals, Hay posted back-to-back major decision to solidify his third place finish.  

Diakides earned five team points in a series of wins with an exciting 4-3 decision in TBA 1 in the consolation round advancing him to the 3rd place match. In an close 3-2 finish, Diakides won in TB-2 to earn himself third place and 13 team points.  

At 174 pounds, Gibson pinned his consolation semifinal opponent for his advancement to the 3rd place match. The freshman won by decision 8-6 to end his day in third place with 10 team points.  

Matthew Rothman (Orange, CT) and Cam Smith (Abington, MA) got into the win column for the Engineers at 149 and 285, respectively. Rothman pinned his first foe of the day after 43 seconds on the mat earning himself four team points. Smith also pinned his opponent at 2:56 adding another four team points for the Engineers.  

Jared Bushnell (Rutland, MA) added two team points with a major decision in the consolation round to finish his first season on the mat for the Boynton Hillers.  

Next up for WPI is the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional.  The Crimson and Gray participate in the 17-team event next Saturday and Sunday at Rhode Island College.  The top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the NCAA Championships on March 13th and 14th hosted by the hosted by American Rivers Conference in Cedar Rapids, IA.
