Dell'Aera, Thatcher and Gens Reach the Podium for Wrestling at RIT Invitational

Rochester, NY --- Tommy Dell'Aera (Eastchester, NY) and Chris Gens (Avon, CT) placed third in their respective weight classes to highlight WPI Wrestling's showing Saturday at the 55th annual RIT Invitational.  The Engineers amassed 68.5 points on their way to an eighth-place finish in the 16-team event won by the host Tigers, which totaled 168.5 points.    

Dell'Aera reached the podium at 157 pounds while Gens claimed bronze at 285.  The duo was joined on the podium by Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) who placed fourth at 125.   

Dell'Aera began his day with three-straight pins, including a pair of first-period falls, to reach the semifinals.  After a loss to the eventual champion, the fourth-seeded sophomore used another pin among his next two victories to claim third. 

Gens, the eighth seed, tallied a first-period fall and a 6-0 shutout before being knocked to the consolation bracket in the quarterfinals.  The heavyweight's road back to third featured four victories, including two first-period pins and a thrilling 8-7 triumph in the third-place bout. 

Thatcher advanced to the semifinals by posting a potpourri of wins featuring an 18-2 tech fall, a 10-1 major decision, and a 9-8 decision before settling for fourth place.   

184-pounders Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA) and Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) both earned points for the Boynton Hillers.  The former registered back-to-back wins by decision while the latter notched an opening round pin at 1:11.

Chris Cook (Mount Kisco, NY) won a pair of matches as the third seed at 133 pounds.  The junior began his day with a 16-0 tech fall and later added a first-period fall.  Jesse Beers (Larchmont, NY) added to the Crimson and Gray point total by having his hand raised at 141 pounds. 

WPI closes out the 2021 portion of its schedule with a trip to Johnson & Wales to face NYU and New Jersey City beginning at noon.
