Providence, RI – The WPI wrestling squad faced NYU and New Jersey City in matches at the Johnson & Wales quad located in the Wildcat Center this afternoon. The Engineers dropped the opening match to NYU 44-3 and fell to NJCU 34-10.
Freshman James Purnell (Edgewater, MD) defeated NYU's Alex Behar (Armonk, NY) 3-0 in the 197-pound matchup to mark the Engineers first victory of the day at the Wildcat Center in the opening match against the Violets.
In the second match of the day against the Gothic Knights, Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) won by major decision (14-3) over Tyler Bailey (Point Pleasant, NJ) in the 174-pound contest. Sophomore heavyweight Chris Gens (Avon, CT) concluded the scoring for the Crimson and Gray by having his hand raised. In the following bout against NJCU, freshman Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) took part in perhaps the best match of the day, falling 12-10 in SV1 to the Gothic Knights' George Rivera (Teaneck, NJ).
WPI is now off through final exams and the holiday season, returning to action on Saturday, January 8th in the Jim Aguiar Invitational at Plymouth State. The Engineers will face Bridgewater State at 1:30pm before squaring off with the host Panthers.
