Springfield, MA --- Despite splitting five of the 10 bouts, the WPI wrestling team dropped a tight 28-24 decision to host Western New England in a Friday evening match-up between the two New England Wrestling Alliance foes.
The Engineers dug themselves an 11-0 hole and trailed 23-3 midway through the match before rallying with a trio of falls to draw within two at 23-21. Ryan Powers (Lebanon, CT) began the pin parade at 165 pounds with a first period fall. Adam Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) then picked up a valuable six points with a third period pin at 174 and Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) concluded the impressive Crimson and Gray rally with a first period pin at 184.
The Golden Bears secured the victory when Darby McLaughlin (Springfield, MA) racked up a tech fall at 197 pounds. Chris Gens (Avon, CT) provided WPI its fifth win of the night by posting an 8-1 decision at heavyweight.
WNE got up 11-0 to start as Nicholas Arborio (Berlin, CT) collected a pin at 125 pounds and Corey Cope (Quakertown, PA) amassed a tech fall at 133. Chris Cook (Mount Kisco, NY) got the visitors into the win column with a 9-5 victory at 141 only to see the Golden Bears get pins from Cam Hines (Killingworth, CT) and Luke Pinzino (Plymouth, MA) at 149 and 157 respectively.
WPI closes out the dual meet portion of its schedule when they tangle with Springfield at home. The Senior Day event begins at 3pm in the Sports & Recreation Center.
