Springfield, MA --- Six different WPI wrestlers posted victories as the Engineers competed Saturday at the NCAA Division III Northeast regional hosted by Springfield College.
The Crimson and Gray amassed 13.5 points at the event and will finish in 17th place. Coast Guard leads after day one with defending champion Johnson & Wales 14.5 points behind and NYU in third, 35 points adrift of the top.
Caden Crist (Westerville, OH) and Chris Gens (Avon, CT) each notched triumphs in the winner's bracket for WPI. Crist pinned his 149-pound opponent from Hunter just 1:16 into his preliminary round bout while the fifth-seeded Gens reached the quarterfinals at heavyweight with a second period fall against his foe from Williams.
The Engineers had a solid stretch of results in Cons. Round 1, rattling off four straight triumphs. Alex Abrahamsen (Skillman, NJ) got the run started at 165 pounds with an 8-4 decision versus Merchant Marine. Adam Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) began a streak of three consecutive pins at 174 and was followed by David Gibson (Goffstown, NH) at 184 and James Purnell (Edgewater, MD) at 197. However, those four and Gens lost in the final round of action on Saturday evening just missing out on podium finishes.
Others to compete for WPI at the regionals were Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) at 125 pounds, Antonios Sevastos (Mansfield, MA) at 133, Chris Cook (Mount Kisco, NY) at 141 and Matthew Rothman (Orange, CT) at 157.
Saturday marked the end of the 2021-22 season for the Crimson and Gray. WPI will be back on the mat in early November to kick off the 2022-23 campaign.
