SUMMER REWIND: Dell'Aera, Gens, Powers Pocket Scholar-All America Nods; Wrestling Posts Top Ten Team GPA

Summer Rewind - WPI Wrestling 2022

As part of our summer series, we are looking back at the best moments from the 2021-2022 academic year, today featuring WPI wrestling on naming a trio of sophomores as Division III Scholar All-Americas by the NWCA and boasting the seventh overall team GPA in April.  

Manheim, PA --- Sophomores Tommy Dell'Aera (Eastchester, NY), Chris Gens (Avon, CT) and Ryan Powers (Lebanon, CT) have been selected as Division III Scholar All-Americas by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).  The team also logged the seventh best team GPA out of over 100 Division III wrestling programs nationwide. 

Scholar-All Americans must have at least an average 3.20 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for the previous full academic year (last two semesters) or cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. 

On the competition side, wrestlers must be a national qualifier in 2021-22 and have a minimum win percentage of at least .500. Additionally, wrestlers can also be considered if they placed in the top eight at their respective regional tournament, a win percentage of .500 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled competition in NCAA championship events. A wrestler can also be considered if they have a win percentage of .670 or better and competed in half of the institution's scheduled NCAA events. 

Dell'Aera was having an outstanding campaign before suffering a season-ending injury.  The sophomore posted a record of 13-4 with eight pins and a major decision.  The 157-pounder boasts a 3.78 GPA while majoring in chemical engineering. 

Gens registered five pins en route to amassing a 13-5 record in 2021-22, including winning a bout at the NCAA regional at Springfield.  The sophomore heavyweight is majoring in mechanical engineering and owns a 3.85 GPA. 

Powers emerged as one of the top Engineers this season, winning 8 of 12 matches, including six pins, during his sophomore season.  The 165-pound mechanical engineering major sports a 3.62 GPA. 

As a team, the Engineers boasted a GPA of 3.720 among 10 regional wrestlers plus up to four replacements.  In the team race, Augsburg (MN) finished atop of the field with a 3.879 GPA followed by Stevens (NJ) 3.845, and Chicago's 3.807.  WPI led the parade of nine New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) institutions ranked inside the Top 30.  

Additionally, WPI boasted a conference-best 24 members on the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) All-Academic team.  Joining Dell'Aera, Gens and Powers on the NEWA All-Academic team were Achilles Gikas (Peabody, MA), Adam Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), Alex Abrahamsen (Skillman, NJ), Alexi Echevarria (Beverly, MA), Antonios Sevastos (Mansfield, MA), Caden Crist (Westerville, OH), David Gibson (Goffstown, NH), Declan Williams (Fredericksburg, VA), Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT), Ethan Wilson (Braintree, MA), Isaac Krieger (Newton, MA), James Purnell (Edgewater, MD), Jamie Krigsman (Manhattan Beach, CA), Jeff Marsh (Natick, MA), Jonah Potter (Wells, ME), Lucas Wilson-Wuestefeld (Barrington, RI), Matthew Rothman (Orange, CT), Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA), Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA), Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) and William Gunn (Easthampton, MA).
