Riggs Logs a Pair of First Period Falls; Wrestling Topples Norwich at Castleton Super Quad

Castleton, VT --- Tyler Riggs (North Scituate, RI) registered a duo of first period pins as WPI wrestling team went 1-2 at super quad hosted by nationally-ranked Castleton.  The Crimson and Gray defeated Norwich 34-12 in their opening dual meet of 2022-23 before falling to No. 9 College of New Jersey 46-5 and the host and No. 22 Spartans 34-9. 

The Engineers got off to a quick start against the Cadets as Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) posted a 15-9 triumph at 125 pounds and Connor Doran (Gales Ferry, CT) turned in a 13-3 major decision at 133.  After Norwich broke into the win column at 141 pounds, WPI rattled off six consecutive victories, four of them coming with bonus team points.  Zachary Rioux (Nashua, NH) got the run started at 149 with a 15-0 tech fall shutout at 6:52 and Caden Crist (Westerville, OH) followed with a 11-3 major decision a 157.  

Back-to-back wins by decision were provided by Mario Barberio (Muncy, MA) at 165 and Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) at 174 (10-4).  Barberio's triumph came in a match-up of NEWA-ranked foe, with the eighth-ranked freshman upsetting the sixth-ranked grappler in the class. The surge was concluded with a pair of first period pins by Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) at 184 (1:29) and Riggs at 197 (0:49) 

Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) opened the matchup with the College of New Jersey with the Boynton Hillers only victory in the contest.  The rookie delivered a 16-0 tech fall at 3:56 versus the Lions at 125 pounds. 

Versus Castleton, Antonios Sevastos (Mansfield, MA) notched his name in the win column with a tightly-contest 3-1 decision at 141 before Riggs won perhaps the most action-packed match of the day.  The eighth-ranked 197-pounder found himself down 7-2 early after a flurry of activity in the first period but quickly turned the table with a minute at around one minute.   

All five teams are off until early December.  WPI (1-2) and Castleton (2-1) compete in the Ted Reese Invitational at Southern Maine on Saturday, December 3rd, Norwich (0-2) is at the RIT Invitational the same day and the College of New Jersey (4-0) takes part in the two-day Standard Corporation Invitational at York (PA) on Friday, December 6th and Saturday December 7th.
