WORCESTER -- Regionally-ranked Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) and Mario Barberio (Muncy, MA) both notched multiple wins Saturday for WPI wrestling as the Engineers hosted a quad meet in the Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday.
WPI (3-8) was defeated in the opener by Trinity 24-21, knocked off by Roger Williams 39-9 in the middle match and were vanquished by nationally-ranked Johnson & Wales 52-3 in the nightcap. JWU (20-3) bested Trinity (6-3) 51-3 and Roger Williams was victorious over Trinity (24-18) in the other matches on the day.
The Crimson and Gray began the day with a pair of wins on their way to 9-0 advantage on Trinity. Thatcher got WPI on the board with a forfeit at 125 pounds and Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) bumped up a class and delivered a 4-2 decision at 133. After Trinity surged ahead 15-6 with three consecutive victories, Barberio evened the match with a first period pin at 1:33 at 165 pounds. The Bantams rattled off three more victories to secure the victory but the Engineers closed out the match with heavyweight Lucas Wilson-Wuestefeld (Barrington, RI) posting a fall at 1:24 of the first period.
WPI turned to their key New England ranked grapplers for its victories against Roger Williams. Eighth-ranked Thatcher pinned his opponent at 6:33 in the 125-pound bout while sixth-ranked Barberio posted a 7-2 decision at 165 pounds.
Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) accounted for the Boynton Hillers win versus No. 4 Johnson & Wales, a team that reached the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals the two weeks ago. The sophomore grinded out a 6-5 victory at 174 pounds over his foe from the Wildcats.
All four teams are back in action a week on Sunday at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships hosted by Springfield. Action is slated to begin at 9:30am with seedings and bracket release revealed during the week.
