Worcester, MA --- The WPI women's rowing program made its 2013 spring debut in Donahue Cup on Saturday, competing against Williams, MIT, Franklin & Marshall and Connecticut College on Lake Quinsigamond.
The varsity eight of made up of Corre Steele (Stow, MA), Anisa Swei (Brookline, MA), Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), Brooke Cotta (Bristol, RI), Julie Waddell (Phoenix, AZ), Elisabeth Boulanger (Grafton, MA), Liz Audet (Terryville, CT), Sandra Garcia-Fine (Cobleskill, NY) and coxswain Jess Prashaw (East Greenbush, NY) had a great showing, placing second in a time of 6:46.89. The Engineers were just six seconds off of defending national champion Williams.
The second varsity eight of Rebecca Barolli (Middlebury, CT), Rachael Matty (Pomfret Center, CT), Victoria Loehle (Morganville, NJ), Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Kayla McAvoy (Old Saybrook, CT ), Christina Bottom (Auburn, MA), Arianna Niro (Milford, MA), Kelsey Stergiou (Manchester, NH) and coxswain Dominique Throop (Fairfax Station, VA) was also second, registering a time of 7:13.66 to hold off conference foe Simmons.
The third varsity eight comprised of Sarah Smith (San Jose, CA), Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Zulean Cruz-Diaz (Pharr, TX ), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), Alexa Hiznay (Trumbull, CT), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA), Julia Pershken (Albion, ME), Sarah Bucknam (Johnston, RI) and coxswain Nicole Quintal (Colchester, VT) defeated Williams to capture its race for a second straight year. The Crimson and Gray crossed the finish line in a winning time of 7:16.8.
WPI Women's Rowing returns to the water Sunday, entertaining Rochester, Bates and URI on Lake Quinsigamond.
