Women's Rowing Sees 3V Win Again and V8 Place Second at NEWMAC Championships

Worcester, MA --- For the second consecutive year WPI's third varsity eight won its race at the NEWMAC Championships, while the varsity eight and the program as a whole finished second at Saturday's regatta hosted by on Lake Quinsigamond. 

The varsity eight of Corre Steele (Stow, MA), Anisa Swei (Brookline, MA), Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), Brooke Cotta (Bristol, RI), Julie Waddell (Phoenix, AZ), Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Liz Audet (Terryville, CT), Sandra Garcia-Fine (Cobleskill, NY) and coxswain Jess Prashaw (East Greenbush, NY) crossed the line in 6:56.81, finishing behind the nation's second-ranked boat from Wellesley.  

The third varsity eight made up of Sarah Smith (San Jose, CA), Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Zulean Cruz-Diaz (Pharr, TX ), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), Alexa Hiznay (Trumbull, CT), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA), Julia Pershken (Albion, ME), Sarah Bucknam (Johnston, RI) and coxswain Nicole Quintal (Colchester, VT) struck gold for a second straight spring.  The Engineers took the top prize by clocking a time of 7:40.39, about three and a half seconds ahead of Wellesley. 

The second varsity eight comprised of Rebecca Barolli (Middlebury, CT), Rachael Matty (Pomfret Center, CT), Elisabeth Boulanger (Grafton, MA), Victoria Loehle (Morganville, NJ), Kayla McAvoy (Old Saybrook, CT ), Christina Bottom (Auburn, MA), Arianna Niro (Milford, MA), Kelsey Stergiou (Manchester, NH) and coxswain Dominique Throop (Fairfax Station, VA) hit the finish line in a time of 7:20.81 to pocket a fourth-place showing behind Smith, Wellesley and Simmons. 

As a team, WPI finished second behind Wellesley in the NEWMAC championship standings (varsity eight and second varsity eight) and tied for second with Smith for the Florence Jobe Smith Cup, which takes in to account all four boats, including the novice eight. 

The Crimson and Gray were well-represented on the All-NEWMAC team. Prashaw was recognized as conference's the first-ever Coxswain of the Year and was joined on the first team by Cotta, Freed and Boulanger. 

Women's Rowing will be competing Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond against Tufts for the Bernie Brown Cup along with racing against Clark, Skidmore and William Smith.
