Top-Ranked Women’s Rowing Remains Unbeaten in 2019, 2V & 3V Complete Saturday Sweep

WORCESTER – Women's Rowing's varsity eight and second varsity eight won twice while the third varsity eight also claimed victory as the Engineers hosted Clark, Colby, Ithaca, Trinity, UNH, William Smith and Conn College on a rainy Saturday morning on Lake Quinsigamond. The varsity eight and second varsity eight competition featured heats and finals.

The varsity eight grand final saw the top-ranked team in Division III (7:16.2) finish six seconds ahead of Ithaca (7:22.2) as William Smith was third (7:30.8) and Colby was fourth (7:49.7). UNH won the petite final with a time of 7:46.7. Clark (7:51.7) followed five seconds later. The Cougars bested nationally-ranked Trinity (7:56.4) by 4.7 seconds while Conn College was fourth (8:12.7).

In the earlier heats, the Engineers (7:46.4) defeated No. 9 William Smith (7:59.5), Conn College (8:28.01) and No. 11 Trinity (8:30.74) while No. 3 Ithaca (7:38.6) won the other, besting No. RV Colby (7:43.39), UNH (7:45.75) and Clark (8:11.77).

WPI's second varsity eight, the lone crew to hand in a sub-eight minute initial row (7:59.8), was just over 30 seconds quicker than that to win the grand final (7:29.6). Ithaca (7:36.9) crossed the finish line 7.3 seconds later as Colby was third (7:43.5) and Trinity was fourth (8:12.7). William Smith clocked a 7:57.7 to win the petite final. Conn College was 14 seconds behind in second (8:11.7) while Clark was third (8:22.4) and UNH was fourth (8:25.2).

Earlier in the day, the Engineers were 2.5 seconds quicker than Colby (8:02.3) while William Smith (8:38.2) and Clark (8:53.5) followed. Ithaca secured the other heat with a time of 8:14.2. Trinity (8:30.8) was followed by Conn College (8:51.7) and UNH (9:02.3).

WPI secured the third varsity eight race by an 11.1 second margin over Ithaca. Colby trailed the lead boat by 14.2 seconds. Conn College (-25.8) and Trinity (-28.7) were less than three seconds apart in fourth and fifth.

The Engineers host Tufts on Sunday in the Bernie Brown Cup, as well Clark, Skidmore and William Smith, beginning with the Varsity Eight at 9:10am.
