WORCESTER -- The nationally-ranked WPI women's rowing varsity eight had its comeback thwarted by boat-stopping crab as the third-ranked Engineers were upset by #13 Coast Guard Saturday morning on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Bears were poised for the upset, leading by about four seats midway through the race, before WPI came roaring back to cut the deficit in half before catching the crab at 1,375 meters. Video review indicated approximately 28 seconds before the Crimson and Gray resumed rowing. Coast Guard secured the victory reaching the finish line in a time of 7:11.2 while WPI turned in a time of 7:43.9.
The Engineers claimed victory in the second varsity eight. WPI's second eight continued its impressive spring, crossing the line in a time of 7:25.5, 33 seconds ahead of the Bears (7:58.8).
The Crimson and Gray are scheduled to close out the 2021 regular season next Saturday, facing city foe Clark back on Lake Quinsigamond.
