No. 5 Women's Rowing Successfully Defends Donahue Cup, Dispatches No. 2 Williams Twice

Donahue Cup - WPI Women's Rowing 2022

WORCESTER -- For the first time in program history, WPI women's rowing retained the Barbara Donahue Cup, defeating No. 2 Williams twice Saturday in matchup of top five crews Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond.  The Engineers, which won the Cup in 2019, the most recent time it was contested, also were victorious back in 2004.

The fifth-ranked Crimson and Gray kept the Cup in Worcester by heating its morning heat of the varsity eight.  WPI and the Ephs were neck-and-neck at the end with the

Engineers (7:20.59 ) reaching the finish line just 0.89 seconds before Williams (7:21.48).

The Boynton Hillers had a somewhat easier time in defeating the second-ranked boat in the country, besting Williams by 4.26 in the grand final.  No. 7 Clark was third (7:42.19) followed by No. 12 Pacific Lutheran (8:03.50) and Mount Holyoke (8:04.59).

The second varsity eight was edged by Williams in its heat but just over half a second (7:12.8 to 7:13.33).  An injury forced WPI to scratch and allowed the Ephs to cruise to over a 30 second victory in the grand final.

In finals events, WPI placed second to Williams in both the third varsity and fourth varsity eights.  The Engineer 3Vs turned in a time of 7:48.64, nearly 11 seconds ahead of third place Clark while the 4V reached the final buoy in a time of 8:31.96.

The Crimson and Gray return to the water at 9am Sunday, squaring off with No. 1 Wellesley, No. 2 Bates, No. 7 Clark, No. 8 Trinity, No. 9 Hamilton, No. 12 Pacific Lutheran, No. 13 RIT and No. 14 Washington College (MD) in a star-studded regatta on Lake Quinsigamond.
