Garza and Forti Spark Women's Soccer to 3-1 Win Over Coast Guard

Kristen Garza

Worcester, MA --- The combination of senior Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) and freshman Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) hooked up for a pair of goals to help host WPI rally for a 3-1 victory over Coast Guard in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.  With the win, WPI moves to 2-6-1 overall and levels its in conference mark at 1-1 while the Bears even their record at 4-4 and slip to 0-2 in NEWMAC play.

Cierra Collins (Rochester, MA) got Coast Guard onto the scoreboard first at 30:23 when her header from the six-yard line slipped between the WPI goalkeeper and a defender and trickled into the net for her first career marker.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Engineers drew even when Forti used a burst of speed up the right side, dribbled past a defender and crossed it to Garza in front of the goal, eight yards out.  The senior calmly trapped the ball and spun around to the near side and deposited her third goal of the season and 41st of her career.

The duo of Forti and Gazra accounted for the game-winner in the 71st minute when Garza hit a sprinting Forti in stride through the defense and the freshman shot the ball past a diving goalie into the far corner of the net for her third goal of the year.

WPI added an insurance tally with under five minute remaining as junior Hailey Taylor (Colusa, CA) lifted a corner kick to the far post where freshman Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME) deflected it into the net for her second career goal.

Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) picked up the win in net for WPI.  The freshman made three saves on the day, including an outstanding stop in the 12th minute on a shot by Shannon Shelton (Upper Marlboro, MA) that she tipped over the crossbar. Mary Mills (St. Louis, MO) played well in net for Coast Guard, collecting six saves on a sun-soaked Alumni Field.

For the match, WPI enjoyed a 15-4 edge in shots and a 8-1 bulge in corner kicks.

WPI hits the road for a rare Monday contest, traveling to Wentworth for a 5pm non-conference matchup.  Coast Guard is off until next Saturday, when they host NEWMAC rival Clark at noon.
