Women's Soccer Falls in NEWMAC Opener to Wheaton

Nikole Jordan

Worcester, MA --- Kaitlyn Mawicke (Trumbell, CT) came off the bench and registered a goal and an assist to lead visiting Wheaton to a 4-0 shutout of WPI Saturday afternoon in the NEWMAC women's soccer opener for both squads.  Wheaton is now 4-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while the Engineers dip to 1-5 and 0-1 in NEWMAC action.

The Lyons, ranked sixth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll and receiving votes in the most recent D3soccer.com national Top 25, got on the board at 16:05 when Gabriella Verde (Miami, FL) knocked home a flick by Cassey Musse (Candia, NH) following a corner kick.  The visitors added to their lead at 30:41 when Mawicke found a streaking Kristina Braga (Lowell, MA), who deposited the ball into the net for her second goal of the season.

Mawicke dented the scoring column at 57:09 after she took a pass from Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, NJ) and placed the ball in the lower left corner.  The Lyons closed out the scoring with 13 seconds remaining when Shelby Benoit (Easthampton, MA) floated a beautiful shot over the WPI goalie's head following a pass by Kelly Angelo (Atlanta, GA).

Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI) turned away two shots while earning the shutout in net for Wheaton.  She was aided by a team save when Corigliano cleared a Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME) shot following a corner kick near the goal line.

Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) made seven saves for the Engineers, who saw Nikole Jordan (Harvard, MA) clear a ball of the goal line seven minutes into the match.  Langley was credited with a pair of shots on the day for Crimson and Gray.

WPI kicks off a brief two-game road trip Thursday at 3:30pm at UMass Boston.  Wheaton wastes little time getting back on the field as they host Husson on Sunday at 3pm.
