Women's Soccer Falls to Clark 1-0 in Double Overtime Thriller

Maddie Willer

Worcester, MA --- Hana Chamoun (Bala Cynwyd, PA) collected a loose ball in the box and volleyed it past a diving goalkeeper with 5:25 remaining in the second overtime to propel Clark to a 1-0 victory over host WPI in a key NEWMAC women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Cougars improve to 6-7-1 overall and 3-3 in conference action while WPI is now 5-8 on the season and 1-5 in NEWMAC play.

Clark had the only two shots of the second sudden death session as Jenna Zarou (Garden City, NY) missed high nearly a minute and a half before Chamoun's fourth goal of 2012 sent the guests home happy. The Cougars nearly won the game in the closing seconds of the first overtime but WPI goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) tipped Emma Lynch's (Pawtucket, RI) game-winning chance just over the cross bar.

The game started slow with Clark tallying five of the stanza's seven shots. The second half saw an increase in scoring chances, none better then in the 87th minute when Willer denied Charlotte Mays' (Melrose, MA) breakaway bid. After WPI narrowly missed knocking home a cross a minute later, the Cougars got two more shots in the waning seconds but were repelled on both occasions by Willer.

Clark netminder Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, MD) was credited with three stops en route to recording her fourth shutout of the season. Willer made eight saves in between the pipes for the Engineers.

The visitors enjoyed a 19-7 bulge in shots and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks. WPI's Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) led all players with four shots on the day.

WPI continues its four-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting Smith at 7pm in another matchup with NEWMAC Tournament implications. Clark plays the middle match of a three-game road trip the same day at 6pm at Mount Holyoke.
