Forti Nets a Pair as Women's Soccer Takes Norwich Classic Championship

Northfield, VT --- WPI rattled off four second half goals to defeat host Norwich 4-0 and in the process captured the inaugural NU Women's Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon.   The victory came a day after the Engineers defeated Johnson State 9-0 and the Crimson and Gray is now 2-0 to start a season for the first time 2001.

After a scoreless first half that saw WPI attempt all 22 shots, the visitors finally solved the tenacious Norwich defense in the 48th minute with a goal by Sarah Sawatzki (Tacoma, WA) off a scramble in front of the goal to take the lead for good. It was the first career marker for the junior.

The Engineers added three more goals, including two from senior forward Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) en route to the 4-0 victory to clinch the NU Women's Soccer Classic title. Forti scored in the 60th and 70th minute with the first coming off a pretty crossing pass from Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME) from the right side and then the latter coming on a solo breakaway where she deposited the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.  Forti now has three goals on the season and 23 in her career.

Abbie McIninch (New Kent, VA) capped the scoring with Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) picking up the assist. McIninch booted the ball into an open net after Doherty's initial shot was blocked away by NU senior goalkeeper Allison Hull (South Royalton, VT).

Hull was magnificent for the Cadets in goal all game long to help keep the Engineers off the board. She stoned Forti with 15 minutes left in the first half with a diving save to just push the ball wide of the right post. Hull totaled 19 saves on the games as WPI outshot Norwich 42-1.

Norwich's backline of senior Liz Chapdelaine (Somerset, Mass.), junior Morgan Lamorey (Northfield, VT), Victoria Sohn (Embrun, Ontario) and Morgan Ziegler (New Britain, CT) played all 90 minutes for the Cadets.

Ziegler saved a goal with 6:22 to play in the first half when she tracked down a ball to push it away from the goal just in time after a WPI player had evaded Hull and sent a shot towards the open net.

Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) picked up her the shutout in net for the Engineers.  It was her second win of the season and 19th of her career, as well as her 11 career blanking.

WPI travels to Gordon on Wednesday for a 4:30pm non-conference affair. Norwich continues its five-game home stand to open the 2013 season on Wednesday, Sept. 4 when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College at 7pm under the lights at Sabine Field.
