Worcester, MA --- Senior Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME) connected on a pass in the 79th minute to lift WPI Women's Soccer to a 3-2 triumph over Fitchburg State in a non-conference tilt on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the win, the Engineers remain undefeated (6-0) while the Falcons slip to 1-4 on the season.
Senior Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) sent Langley a pass that dribbled into the lower right corner of the net for the decisive marker at 78:50. The game-winning tally was Langley's third of the season. Earlier in the second half, freshman Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) broke through with her first collegiate goal off a nifty cross from Forti to even the game at 2-all in the 54th minute.
With under a minute left in the second half, junior Sarah Haley (Holbrook, MA) had her bid to extend the game denied by senior Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY), who swatted away the attempt.
Fitchburg State took a brief 1-0 lead at 11:59 when junior Sierra Santos (Lakeville, MA) found an opening in the lower left corner with help from freshman Samantha Zina (Abington, MA). Forti netted the equalizer 33 seconds later when she beat the Falcon goalkeeper on a one-on-one opportunity.
The guests went back on top in the 20th minute when senior Rachel Jamieson's (Foxboro, MA) long boot from the 30-yard line sailed above the WPI netminder. At the 23:14 mark, senior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, MA) made a one-handed stop on a point blank shot taken by Bracken to preserve the 2-1 advantage.
Willer halted four shots for the Engineers while Kirouac corralled a game-best five saves. WPI finished with a 14-7 bulge in shots while the Falcons held a slim 2-1 edge in corners.
The Engineers hit the road for a brief two-game road trip, visiting Framingham State Tuesday at 4pm. Fitchburg State is off until next Saturday when it entertains Westfield State at 2pm in its MASCAC opener.
