Fatal's Dramatics Deliver Women's Soccer Its First NEWMAC Victory

Janine Fatal

Worcester, MA --- Freshman Janine Fatal (Amesbury, MA) used her first collegiate goal to snap a 1-1 tie at 99:16 to lift host WPI to a 2-1 overtime win over Babson in a NEWMAC women's soccer match on Tuesday night at Alumni Field. The win moves the Engineers to 7-3-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Babson, who is receiving votes in the latest D3soccer.com Women's Top 25 poll, dips to 7-2-1 on the year and 2-1 in the loop.

Fatal knocked home a rebound amid a wild scrum in front of the net following a corner kick with just 44 seconds showing on the scoreboard.

Babson juniors Jenny Moore (Duxbury, MA) and Jessica DiPhilippo (Falmouth, ME) took aim at WPI senior goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) in the 10th and 11th minute but it was Engineer senior Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) that found the back of the net first nearly 10 minutes later on a beautiful header past the Babson backstop from eight yards out for her NEWMAC-leading eighth goal of the season. Sophomore Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) setup the early strike as she lifted a high-arching cross to Forti at the left post. Babson held a 5-2 advantage in shots while WPI took four of the five corner kicks in the opening half.

Forti had a chance to add to the Engineers lead in the 55th minute but her header went above the crossbar. Five minutes later, the Beavers pulled even when senior  Mika Cucullo(South Salem, NY) deposited a low shot off a feed from classmate Meghan Andrew (Easton, MA). The visitors held a 7-2 margin in shots and took the only corner kick of the stanza.

For the game, Babson outshot WPI 13-7 while the Engineers held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
