Last Scoring Barrage Propels Women's Soccer Past Emerson

Natalie McMillan

Worcester, MA --- Natalie McMillan (Acton, MA) and Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) registered goals just 4:06 apart late in the second half as WPI posted a 2-0 shutout over visiting Emerson a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup played Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field.

WPI is now 8-3-1 on the season and 2-2 in conference play while Emerson slips to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in NEWAMC action.

The homestanding Engineers used a set piece to break a scoreless tie in the 71st minute when Megan Forti's (Lynn, MA) corner kick was headed in by McMillian for the senior back's third marker of the season and fifth of her career.

WPI got an important insurance tally just over four minutes later when Doherty dribbled around the top of the box and placed the ball in the lower left corner at 74:20 for her fourth goal of 2013.

The Crimson and Gray defense then took center stage, not allowing a shot after the Engineers grabbed the lead.   On the day, WPI held a 11-6 edge in shots while Emerson had a narrow 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Forti was a force for WPI, attempting six of the Boynton Hiller's 11 shots.  Alyssa Giannone (Mountainside, NJ) was the only Emerson player with multiple shots, including the Lyons best bid in the 66th minute.

WPI goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) was credited with six saves while posting her 25th career victory and 12th career shutout.  Marissa MacDonald (Winchester, MA) repelled six shots of her own in a strong effort for the guests.

The Engineers return to action on Tuesday with a 7pm NEWMAC road match at Coast Guard.  Emerson, who has the NEWMAC bye on Tuesday, is off until next Saturday when they host Smith at 1pm.
