Doherty and Forti Help With Women's Soccer's Playoff Push in Win Over Clark

Emily Doherty

Worcester, MA --- WPI received goals from Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) and Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) to post a critical 2-1 NEWMAC women's soccer victory over visiting Clark on Tuesday evening at a chilly Alumni Field.

The win pushes WPI's record to 9-6-2 on the season and 3-5-1 in conference action.  The Engineers enter the final day of league action on Saturday with 10 points, a point behind Coast Guard (1-1 tie at Wellesley) and even with Smith (1-0 loss at Mount Holyoke) for the final two NEWMAC Tournament spots.   WPI is at Mount Holyoke Saturday while Coast Guard and Smith take on conference co-leaders MIT and Wheaton respectively.

Doherty broke open a scoreless game in the 16th minute when she collected a ball, dribbled through the middle and shot from just outside the box into right corner of the net for her fifth marker of the season.  The Crimson and Gray saw the better of the action in the opening 45 minutes of play, attempting seven of the stanza's nine shots.

The Engineers received a key insurance tally in the 56th minute when Forti blasted a direct kick from about 28 yards out for her 11th goal of 2013 and the 31st of her career.

Clark would not go away quietly as the Cougars registered eight of the match's final 11 shots.  The visitors nearly dented the scoring column in the 77th minute but Janelle Pasternack's (North Brookfield, MA) shot caromed off the cross bar.  Clark pulled one back exactly two minutes later when Kara Fischer (Belmont, MA) corralled the ball at the top of the box and finished to the lower left corner for her first career goal.

The Cougars nearly got the equalizer with under two minutes remaining but Fischer's bid sailed just high of the net.

Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) posted five saves on the night en route to recording her ninth win of the season and 26th of her career. Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, MD) amassed three stops in net for the guests.

WPI enjoyed a slight 11-10 advantage in shots and 4-2 edge in corner kicks on the night.

Clark closes out its 2013 season Saturday at noon, hosting Emerson at noon.
